It is a short-lived perennial which grows up to 50 cm high with pinnate leaves with leaflets that have toothed margins. Although eastern species of the genus usually have yellow flowers, ''G. macmillanii'' has flowers which are mauve to purple. These appear between November and February in the species native range.〔 The species was first formally described by Victorian Government Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1859 in ''Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae''.
